Join our VIP judges, including geospatial experts and technical and military leaders, on Aug. 5 for the final live pitch round of Polar Vortex: Hacking the Arctic hackathon. The virtual event competition challenges participants to develop creative solutions, concepts, technologies, or systems to help collect, analyze, process, and visualize geospatial data in the austere and mobile environments in the Arctic. EVENT: Attention Omaha Innovators - Join us at the Defense Entrepreneurial Symposium (DES) to see defense-related technology innovation from regional startups and hear from state business development leaders.

AUG. 5, 2021

EVENT: Robert Cardillo, United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) Board Chair, will deliver the keynote address followed by hackathon finalists who will present their event challenge solutions.

AUG. 6, 2021

(DoD ORGANIZATIONS ONLY)

EVENT: Calling all DoD organizations seeking to hire Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) talent. You are invited to participate in the 2021 NSIN National Service Hirethon. Sign up by Aug. 6 to connect with participants and alumni from several NSIN programs who have prior experience with DoD projects, an interest in defense innovation, and a desire to serve their country in meaningful work.

MEDIA: Finalists from NSIN Hacks: Beat the Blaze are using their skills to transform communications and data for wildfire first responders. After witnessing the devastating impact of wildfires, the teams are creating solutions that serve their communities and make them safer and stronger.

DEFENSE INNOVATION NEWS AND EVENTS

NEWS: The 2022 Activate fellowship is seeking candidates for its fall cohort. Fellows learn business concepts, hear from industry leaders, attend skill development workshops, and learn how entrepreneurs can succeed as employers.
Former fellows include some NSIN program alumni.

EVENT: The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) workshop is focused on the commercial industry and academic circles to provide more discussion on the agency’s Moonshot initiative and tips for doing business with NGA’s small business programs.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES 

Follow the new NSIN funding opportunities blog to identify funding across the defense innovation space. Academics, dual-use start-ups, and anyone interested in emerging technology and national security should follow this blog and sign up for updates.
The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) is seeking white papers to acquire research and development for a prototype that can enhance electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) situational awareness for Joint Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations (JEMSO). Submissions will identify capabilities that improve EMS data sharing and support JEMSO operations. White papers are due Aug. 2 by 1 p.m. EDT.
The U.S. Army is issuing a Direct to Phase II contract opportunity for U.S.-based small businesses to provide high-tech solutions for wind-measurement systems in support of the Army’s aviation weapons systems. The Army is awarding up to $1.7 million and an 18-month contract to small businesses that have completed the proof-of-concept stage. Applications are due Aug. 24 by noon EDT.
