Teams ELVEE and Monolithium won the 2021 NSIN Defense Innovation Accelerator (DIA) Showcase Day on Sept. 14. Their winning solutions each took existing DoD lab technologies and paired them with existing tech from their respective companies to create solutions for both military and commercial markets.

Learn how entrepreneurs, government, and industry can work together to solve DoD problems and ignite new opportunities within the defense community. The NSIN track will feature virtual conversations with NSIN’s experts and program alumni.

Can you innovate the Massachusetts National Guard (MANG)? Join the 2021 Patriot Pitch challenge and submit a minimum one-page summary describing the problem and its solution by Oct. 1. For inspiration, view the finalists from last year’s Patriot Pitch challenge. Must join the NSIN UNUM Platform to participate.

NEW OCT. 25, 2021


EVENT: Sign up now to compete in NSIN's Power Play Hackathon. Ensuring energy availability in austere and expeditionary environments –such as forward operating bases, remote installations, or conflict zones –presents a significant challenge for military planners. Additional work is needed to make electronics and field equipment more efficient. Can you hack it?

OCT. 31, 2021 (For NSIN alumni only)


EVENT: NSIN alumni can apply for the next iteration of NSIN Vector. Over eight weeks Vector teaches dual-use venture creation business fundamentals to teams. The cohort concludes with a $25,000 prize pitch competition. Applications are open now until Oct. 31. 

DEFENSE INNOVATION NEWS AND EVENTS

SEPT. 26 - OCT. 3, 2021


EVENT: HBCU Week encourages high-school-aged youth to enroll in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), provides scholarships, and sustains a pipeline for employment from college graduation to career application. Students pursuing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees can apply to receive a scholarship up to $10,000.
 

SEPT. 29, 2021


EVENT: Learn about upcoming federal contracting opportunities and doing business with the General Service Administration (GSA), while expanding your network at the GSA Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization. This free virtual training and matchmaking event will provide you with the resources your small business needs to thrive in the federal marketplace.

OCT. 6 - 7, 2021


EVENT: Hear from senior Navy leadership about the strategic direction for Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA) programs. A follow-on day of matchmaking/capability briefings between interested parties and NAVSEA leadership will take place on Thursday, Oct. 7.

OCT. 7, 2021


EVENT: Military acquisition leaders, industry entrepreneurs, and tech investors will discuss case studies, best practices, and recommendations for speeding up defense innovation.
 

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES 

Innovators in undersea technology and offshore wind can apply for this eight-week accelerator program to develop their relationships and capabilities with defense partners. The program will leverage MassChallenge’s proven methodology in startup acceleration and 401 Tech Bridge’s network to spur growth for 10 technology-focused startups. Applications are open now and close Sept. 28.
 
Share your ideas to innovate the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Space Force for a chance to pitch your solution to Department of the Air Force leadership and a panel of industry experts at the 2022 Air Force Association’s Warfare Symposium. Service members will receive education materials to develop their ideas as well as advice from previous Spark Tank participants. Submissions are due Oct. 1.
Entrepreneurs with winning solutions for small electric-powered watercraft may be chosen for a prototype Other Transaction (OT) agreement and invited to submit a follow-on production contract. The product should deliver alternative energy solutions to naval platforms to reduce reliance on fossil fuel products and test the capability, safety, and reliability of underutilized energy storage devices in the maritime domain. Submissions are due to the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) by Oct. 1.
The xView3 Challenge prize competition seeks to identify the best computer vision algorithms to advance the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The challenge, sponsored by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and Global Fishing Watch (GFW), will award a total of $150,000 to developers with selected solutions that harness satellite-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to detect dark vessels. Submissions are due by Nov. 30
